TGA has compared the intent of the existing essential principles with general safety and performance requirements set out in the EU regulations on medical devices (MDR) and in vitro diagnostics (IVDR). The comparison allowed TGA to identify areas in which EU regulations add requirements to improve safety or performance, add clarity to the expectation of compliance or introduce terminology. Main aspects are; the need to reduce risks as far as possible without adversely affecting the benefit-risk ratio, the creation of risk-management systems and steps to eliminate or cut risks related to user error. #safety #riskmanagement

#Healthcare is one of the most impactful and complex industries. The high cost of innovation, the long time to market, the interconnection between governance, infrastructure, funding and innovation in diagnostics, medicines, health services, digital solutions and health data make this sector unique. This year I was given by #Roche the incredible opportunity to dive deeper into understanding first hand the complexity and transformative potential of in vitro diagnostics by stepping into the role of General Manager of #RocheDiagnosticsThailand. I am excited by the already materialized and the yet-to-be fulfilled potential of IVD solutions to prevent and early diagnose diseases, which today affect or take too many lives and which cost society tremendous resources. My journey this year has been rewarding and as 2024 comes to a close, I reflected on few key takeaways, which I am sharing here and hope to hear back your thoughts: #1: Lab customers’ expectations are moving beyond mere delivery and servicing of instruments and high medical value assays. They are looking for end-to-end solutions, including seamless integration and automation. They seek deployment of insight, efficiency and clinical-decision driving digital solutions & algorithms. They seek to improve their ESG standards. #2: Governments & payers increasingly understand the value of including diagnostics and associated digital solutions in clinical and reimbursement guidelines in order to sustainably manage outcomes especially in critical disease areas such as cardio-vascular/metabolic, oncology, neurology, infectious diseases. #3: Private-public partnerships are necessary to deliver integrated, impactful and accessible end-to-end solutions to healthcare needs. Especially when it comes to areas such as telemedicine, robotics, big data, everyone needs to collaborate in open ecosystems. #4: As our portfolio expands, we need to tap into new skills, capabilities and we need to evolve our operating models and ways of working. We need to be customer-centric, agile and to engage new stakeholders. We need collective leadership & creative mindset, high levels of empowerment and accountability to drive high performing culture in our organizations. I am extremely grateful to my fabulous team at Roche Diagnostics Thailand for their great welcome and onboarding, to my Roche Diagnostics APAC Sub-Regional and Regional leaders - Johnny Tse & Lance Little - for entrusting me the opportunity to contribute to this amazing project, to my previous RDC leader Pedro Aparicio Goncalves - for developing me and supporting my journey in this amazing company, to my APAC ET colleagues for being a source of inspiration and motivation and to my spouse Cristiana Irimescu for always being there for me regardless of time and place. We had intense conversations over the last 3 days in Antwerp during the "Medical Devices & Connected health" conference organized by PDA - Parenteral Drug Association and post-event "The future of Drug Delivery" workshop. Drug delivery devices 💉 are an essential component to unlock value along the care journey allowing people to forget about their conditions while improving engagement and outcomes, allowing physicians and hospitals 🛌 to care about the ones that need it the most and allowing payers 💲 to know what they are paying for. All that while reducing overall healthcare carbon footprint 🌏. Behavioral design, connected healthcare, cybersecurity, large-volume injectors for @ Home use and devices sustainability impact were discussed deeply. Everyday, medical technologies help save the lives of patients across the Asia Pacific region. Indeed, APAC is home to 60% of the worlds population which is rapidly ageing with 1 in 4 estimated to be > 65 years old by 2050. The region is home to the largest global population with chronic disease yet approximately 1 billion people don’t have access to even the basics of healthcare provision. By supporting patients, healthcare professionals and the wider healthcare ecosystem, the APAC MedTech market has become the second largest globally generating over $150 billion in revenue and is home to 25,000 companies with over 350,000 employees. The Asia Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed) represents over 350 global manufacturers and suppliers of medical equipment, industry associations and groups associated with the medical technology industry in Asia Pacific. It is the only trade association representing the entire region and as such our mission is to improve the standards of care for patients wherever they may be through partnership with regulators and pursuing innovative solutions to healthcare needs. Each year APACMed hosts an annual forum to discuss key topics that can advance healthcare and the industry, last year we had over 2000 delegates from 28 different countries including government officials, investors, patient groups, policy makers and established multinational companies along with a rapidly increasing number of start-ups. In 2025, the forum will be held outside of Singapore for the first time, in India...why? The Indian medical devices sector has great potential to grow x4 the current market size by 2030, backed by growing healthcare needs and the government’s commitment to facilitate growth. Indeed, APACMed members have increased their presence investing in R&D centers, manufacturing, and training facilities to support both local and global needs, as India continues to innovate for the world. The 2025 forum will bring together stakeholders from the healthcare ecosystem and government with a goal to advance India’s MedTech sector, focusing upon innovation, localization, manufacturing, and regulatory policies. 📢 Today MedTech Europe and 39 national associations requested specific actions from European Commissioner for Health & Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides regarding the IVDR and MDR. To expand on the 'bridging measures' mentioned in action #2, they state that 'these measures cannot wait until the targeted evaluation is concluded and full packages of legislative reforms are written and published into EU law, which will take years. These measures should have sufficient legal weight to achieve the following: 👉 1. Time and costs for certifying devices must be significantly reduced and made predictable. Immediate action here is vital both for helping to halt the ongoing disappearance of today’s devices and for attracting investment in bringing innovations to Europe. 👉 2. Assessment of changes to medical technologies must be made more efficient to allow the latest technologies to reach patients swiftly. 👉 3. An accelerated pathway for breakthrough innovation should be put in place to bring first in class products to Europe first or in parallel with other jurisdictions. 👉 4. Adapt certification to follow a life-cycle approach. This would eliminate a major disincentive for manufacturers to certify and maintain devices under the medical technology regulations and help prevent anticipated certification bottlenecks during the transition periods to the regulations.' 🔊 My main concern has been measure #1. I cannot see how small manufacturers can remain competitive in the Union at the costs of IVDR compliance. It seems that the implementation of the IVDR as it stands today has made it so that only large companies can succeed, which will absolutely squash innovation and negatively impact European patients.
